Considering you literally cannot and are not supposed to be able to beat him, yes. Yes he is.

And it's not made clear that you're not supposed to beat him unless you read a fucking message that's practically where he's standing. Which is bad conveyance.

Actually that's wrong. There's three ways to beat him on the first encounter. If you are skilled enough and take not even a single hit, you can kill him with your fists.

Your sword hilt.

And the last method, making your starting gift black firebombs. He's notoriously weak to fire and the starting bombs you get can take him out in four hits.

And, technically you are supposed to beat him on the first go because he drops a one of a kind hammer that you get from nowhere else in the game from his first encounter only. So while it's not common to beat him on the first go.

You still can. You're not supposed to lose to him. It's your choice entirely.

The one on Hallow is bad, but you can kinda grind it out. But on the Island, that motherfucker, having to farm off Waka balls gave me nightmares xD

Yep! I guess there's technically three if you count the first HB fight, but that one's not "notoriously hard".

Grinding is, yeah, the best option for decimating him when he's possessed by Ansem, but you really just have to learn his patterns for getting wins on the island. When I first played KH, I was convinced the island fight was one of those intentionally unwinnable ones, lol.

I'm not so sure. First of all, he exists as a very poignant statement about the theme of the game, demonstrates how the death mechanic works, and also serves to tell a realistic story where cursed souls can't just idly wander out of the asylum and have to use their curse to continue to fight a struggle they certainly can't win without dying (numerous times if necessary). In addition, he also serves as an early reward for replaying the game since then you will be able to beat him, and you'll be well-rewarded for doing so.

Death is a core mechanic in the game, and the asylum shows that off very well.

Actually you can beat him cause I did. I apparently didn't get the memo that you were supposed to run away.

Maybe you are referring to something completely different, though. I assumed you were alluding to my experience there.
I can also say that I have killed the asylum demon with the broken sword and it was pretty exciting.

a mechanic is something that performs some kind of function
what exactly is the function of death beyond a penalty for your fuck ups

you could argue that death is a core mechanic in all video games--i don't think dark souls is special, just because it happens more often, just because the game tries too hard to be tough

Ocram from Terraria is really easy for me... He's supposed to be the hardest boss besides Duke Fishram, but I find him really easy...

But I guess it's because I use Ichor and Frostburn which makes anything besides the Twins (Armor bypass OP) easy...
