You say that, but a major part of Pokemon is collecting your Pokemon and watching them smash into each other and shoot lightning, and when we know what we're capable of, there's no excuse for black and white flame sprites.

Actually I always turn battle animations off. I don't really care for them.

Graphics matter a lot, whether you appreciate them or not.

They really, really don't. So long as they get the job done, that's all that matters.
I'm beating a dead horse here, but whether or not you, personally, appreciate something does not change whether or not it is important.

Games have to be beautiful as well as functional, I've never bought into the stupid indie 8-bit fad, its almost never charming.

There is absolutely no excuse for delivering a lazy product when you can bring so much more to the table, Crystal would be a high school project today, albeit an A+ project.

Just because you appreciate it does not change whether or not it is important.

8-bit games can be beautiful, but games do not need to be beautiful.

I don't like the indie game fad either, but those games suck for reasons other than "they look old".

This is just my own opinion but I think graphics do matter to me somewhat because if a game is butt ugly it's distracting.

Functionality is only half of a game. Not to mention that it isn't even the half that sells.

Sorry, but games are not one sided. Like any art form they have many different facets, and none of them can be weak.

Crystal is lacking in features compared to newer releases, and is graphically uncaptivating.

That doesn't change the fact that its my favorite Pokemon game, but the reality is that if it released tomorrow it would be nothing more than a joke.

You either die a hero or live long enough to become Mythic..
IMO.

The reason why games like the original Pokemon and Fallout 1&2 are revered for being good is because.

1: At the time of release, they were very good games, since they are kinda old.

2: Nostalgia.

You really can't blame a gem like Pokemon Red, Blue and Green for not being up to par with today's standards. As it was up to par with 1990's standards.

However, a first installment released today would have to be up to today's standards. Which means it can be judged equally.

Nostalgia wise, can't really blame anyone for looking through those goggles. Looking back at memories when the games were great at the time is always nice.

Tbh the Gen 2 games did have quite a bit to do. It's lacking compared to today's games yeah but still, as a game it wasn't really THAT barebones.

I agree with you on most of it but having nostalgia for something shouldn't stop people for looking at it with a critical eye. That's just blind fanboyism and I think having a better understand of something and not just being like 'hurr durr its good cause i liked it as a kid' will help you appreciate it more.

silver/gold/crystal by default have more content than your average pokemon game, given that they have two full regions to explore.

I said you can't BLAME THEM.

I LOVED Starfox Assault when I was younger, but even now I can see it was more mediocre.

Same rules apply. You shouldn't let it hinder you, but you can't really blame them for doing so, everybody does it to an extent. I started playing Pokemon at Diamond and I love that game, but I can probably look back at it and see the flaws with that one.

Aside from maybe Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, G/S/C still have the most content in a Pokemon game.

I care about graphics. But then, that's the field I want to go into so it's something I'm interested in.

Though the main reason I play Alien Isolation is because of how fucking fantastic-looking the game is. I don't like horror games, but the sheer fidelity of the textures, animations and the attention to detail and obvious care taken by the developers to make the game feel part of the Alien universe ( being an art style I absolutely adore) is what keeps me coming back. The amazing space stuff you see in Elite Dangerous (albeit combined with the scientific accuracy of the stellar bodies and physics) is like half the reason I play that game too.

I've never made graphics stop me from playing, but a game looking good can make me keep playing even if the gameplay isn't all that great.

You might not like the 3D models for the new Pokémon games, but they're generally considered to be "better" than the old sprites--and they're only going to get even better and more detailed as time goes on. Generation VI, to me, would easily be my favorite generation if I wasn't a stubborn nostalgic baby.
To be honest I'd like it more if it wasn't for the pandering to Gen 1 all the time.

Oh select a new 3? Oh it's the original 3 starters

Two fossils? Oh gen 1 had that.

And all the gen 1 pokemon just thrown in for whatever reason. Didn't like it much. I felt it wasn't being bold enough to go out on its own. Not because I hate gen 1 pokemon, because I don't. It just felt like it was doing nothing but throwing it in whenever they could.

I'm still currently playing it, so this is more so fresh on my mind and my first impressions really. I'm still enjoying a lot of it, like the cool 3D when walking through some caves and stuff.

I can't speak for Jim but I personally can't stand isometric games.
Not liking a genre is fine. I think you should review and judge a game based on what it was trying to go for, and if it accomplished that. That and of course comparing it with other games in the said genre. At least a lot of the time.

For example No Mans Sky tried to go for randomly generated worlds that look different, but in the end it was all the same. So the main thing it tried to accomplish, failed miserably.

If a game has bad lighting, textures, and character models, yes a lot of the times it is horribly distracting. This usually ties into games that are going for the more realistic look. Doesn't look pretty.

If you don't have the budget to make something look up to today's standards, you better either be an indie developer with not much, or think of a nice art style that can make it forgivable.

Slows down the game too much. I'm not one of those people who tries their darnedest to NOT get in Pokemon battles. I like to defeat every trainer possible in the entire game.

So as a result I end up wasting a lot of time looking at the Thunderbolt animation for the millionth time.

In pokemon X/Y since it's a brand new pokemon game with everything new, I made it an effort to "catch em all" again. I have to say it's been a bit fun since in recent installments I only capture what I wanted to use.

I'm seeing new pokemanz and thinking of new parties of pokemon I never use, so that's great. I'll actually be sitting at my PC and thinking of what I want to use. I've never done that. For example, Snorlax is in gen 1, but I never used him, so this brand new combo is honestly neat.

But harking back to what I said about Gen 1, I got Squirtle since I started off with Fennekin (Braixen looks the best if you ask me), but because I ALWAYS used Squirtle in Blue/Red/FF/LG, I just... am not really feeling it. But he's my only decent water, so yeah. I've been hoping Magikarp somehow magically pops up so I can use him.

Yeah, I fight everyone too, but the only time I ever find myself turning off animations is if I'm grinding. I also play nuzlockes only, as you know, and that has its way of making every animation the most nail-biting thing ever.

I can also completely understand shutting off animations in Gen IV. Those games made battles so fucking slow for no reason. In Gen V, they were lightning fast, which was awesome.

Eh the 500 is basically nothing and really easy to get back, and you can start training up the Magikarp earlier (I usually just grind it up before Misty)

Yeah, the Gen 1 pandering is real. And it's not letting up, either--all of the Alola forms they've revealed so far have been for first generation Pokémon only, which a lot of people are upset about.

I can tolerate it, personally, but the nostalgia-baiting is hard to deny.

Oh I stopped playing Oblivion because of the god awful character faces. Waaaay too distracting.

Morrowind was fine because of when it came out, but Oblivion just looked like shit.
